As founder of MEMconsultants, Mary provides consulting services that empower mission-based organizations with the planning, evaluation, and collaboration skills necessary to achieve remarkable results. Driven by a desire to make a positive impact, Mary has earned expertise in capacity-building for both small and large nonprofit organizations that employ strategies rooted in social justice. With a B.A. in psychology from Haverford College, she began her career as a special education teacher in rural North Carolina. This experience inspired her career in strengthening the impact of community-based efforts that serve the families living in poverty. As a senior director during the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority's initial start-up period, she created and managed systems of capacity-building to over five hundred grantees, including school districts, law enforcement agencies, and community-based agencies working to prevent violence. While earning a M.A. in community & prevention research from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Mary provided program evaluation support, staff training, and project management to nonprofit organizations, schools and university-based prevention projects. In addition to her day job, Mary is a passionate advocate for primate welfare and conservation, and has provided care for gorillas and orangutans at National Zoo in Washington, DC and Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA, and is the Board President of Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest. Mary founded and led alumni chapters in Chicago and Seattle for Teach for America, an organization that addresses the inequities facing children growing up in low-income areas. Mary also serves on the Board of the Northwest Development Officers Association. As an Americorps Member, she provided direct services and community outreach activities in St. Louis. Margaret is Board President of Girls on the Run Puget Sound, which provides after school programs for girls ages 8-11. At MEMconsultants Margaret focuses on survey database management and report generation.
